One of the most sexist mangas Ive ever read
Bakuman, written and drawn by the same guys who gave us Deathnote, a very good series. But Bakuman is terrible.
Bakuman is about two young guys who decide to make a manga, and maybe its my inner egomaniac, but i love series about people who make comics. It makes me feel inspired. The male characters in this are varied and interesting. There are female characters. EVERY female character is written terribly.

There's the main characters girlfriend, Azuki, who is incredibly beautiful and wants to be a voice actress, she is timid and pure and virginal. and BORING. She's the ideal angel intangible on a pedestal girl. She doesn't even want to touch the main character until they are married.

Then there is Miyoshi, who is the other characters girlfriend. she has no goals in life other than being a wife. and specifically says out loud her only dream is her boyfriends success

Then there is Aoi. She is only other manga artist who is a female. She is shown to be stuck up and rude, she has an inability to draw shonen manga. She completely changes her ways after being humbled by the main characters, then only becomes successful after BEGGING a male character to teach her to draw panty shots.

Do the writers not know what they are doing? This stuff RUINS the manga for me. Its not even the blatant all the girls are in a bikini kind of sexism its worse. The girls are either props, or worshipers. Or they need be humbled by the noble males into changing their ways and acting more male.

Here's the most telling line in the series to me
"Men have dreams that women just don't understand."
ARGH

Yeah, I came here via WFA, and man, thanks for the heads up. I'll be sure to keep the hell away from this.

I also got my oldest niece the first two volumes of Claymore, which features a multitude of awesome, kickass female demon and monster hunters. She read them both the same day she got them and enjoyed them immensely.

Sexism is ugly, yeah, and it can get pretty blatant in some series, no matter what country it's produced in. The only difference with manga is that there is such a huge and wide field of it that it's almost rather easy to find something one likes and isn't insulting.

yeah i LOVE manga, (thanks for the heads up about Claymore! I will check it out!) American comics are no picnic either when it comes to sexism XD but if you look there's good stuff to be found. I wish someone would make a list of shonen manga that was girl friendly

"Men have dreams that women just don't understand."

And yet, Rumiko Takahashi and Hiromu Arakawa seem to be getting by just fine.

And pfft. Who needs to be taught how to draw panty shots? Like that's hard.

Phase 1: Display underpants.
Phase 2: ?
Phase 3: Profit!

(Here from When Fangirls Attack!)

UGH YES

I love Obata Takeshi's artwork like crazy, but his series are consistently not so good to terrible with women.

(Also here from When Fangirls Attack.)

I agree entirely with the above poster, and it's why I have very little interest in anything Obata Takeshi draws anymore. I've never read Hikaru no Go, but Wikipedia tells me that its female cast is, at best, peripheral; the principal love interest is apparently a 'weak player' whose affection is unrequited. Death Note has a number of female characters who are likable enough on a character-by-character basis, but within the context of the series, none of Light's egregiously misogynistic views of women are ever proven incorrect. The women are all either a) useful to him and dumb or b) a threat to him, less clever than he is, and dead in fairly short order. Bakuman has all the problems you've just observed of it, and the less said about the repellent RalΩGrad the better. Even his game designs are headache inducing (see: Castlevania: Judgement).

*ahem* Sorry for the mini-rant from a stranger. I've noticed this for a while with the artist, and have never had a particular venue to say so. These days I just assume he doesn't agree to do a project unless it's horribly exclusive of/offensive to women. It's a shame, given how meticulously detailed and interesting his artwork is.

Sadly, out of Obata's series, HnG probably treats its female cast the nicest; although they're mostly absent, at least there's no active misogyny displayed (although now that I think about it I don't actually remember any female pro go player characters, DX, which is particularly bizarre in light of the fact that the advising go pro was a woman!), but the women at least seem to have lives outside of the men. Compared to DN, where the ladies motivations tend to revolve around the menz anyway. (Thinking mostly of Naomi and Misa here, as I don't really recall any other particularly prominent female characters.) And DN has all those other squicky factors you mention!

The only reason I continued with RalΩGrad past the first chapter was that I couldn't believe that they really were pursuing such an awful premise to the "story".

Try Seirei no Moribito. There's a novel, a manga, and an anime. I only watched the anime, but I'm trying to find the novels.

The protagonist, Balsa, is strong, beautiful, and mature.

Furthermore, the "guy" in the story is a non-combatant "healer" type, and the role reversal is -very- satisfactory on all levels. Revenge!
