Okay, so I decided to make a pan of apple crisp, since I wanted to do something with this package of pre-sliced granny smith apples we bought this weekend. It was extremely easy, since I used a packaged topping mix.

I peeled and cored the apple slices that still had a core (Motts did a pretty good job for me) and mixed the topping with 5 tbsp of butter like the package told me, but I added two handfuls of chopped walnuts and a bit of allspice and nutmeg to the apples (just to make it taste less... packaged). Baked at 375 for 25-30 minutes and TA-DA!

I wish I had vanilla ice cream. ;_;

Tendoniatus..again [Nov. 10th, 2009|10:18 pm]

yamiloo
I'm afraid I have some Bad News: My tendonitis is getting worse than ever, which means I have to take a break from typing and drawing. My doctor says that to make any significant healing, I should rest for at least 3 weeks. =(

That means I have to find another way to update Sister Claire in the meantime! T__T On the bright side, I'm probably going to find some use for those puppets I made ages ago! And maybe I'll make some little sculptures with the extra super-sculpey I have left over from college classes, and sell them in the store? (Which I'm working on right now. =D )

How can you help? I'm so glad you asked! XD If you're interested in submitting a guest page, I'd be happy to post it. Please follow these guidelines:

a) Make sure the final page is 600x900 pixels. This is very important, or it won't fit.
b) If you want to use the same font I do, use Sunday Comics. This isn't required, but just FYI.
c) This goes without saying, but please keep it P-G13. =P Don't do anything *I* wouldn't do!
d) Please mail it to me at claire @ sisterclaire.com, and in the email include the name you wish me to credit, and your website if you have one, so I can link to you. =)

Additionally, any fanart would be appreciated too, and I'll post those more regularly from now on. As with the comics, please include your Name and Website (if applicable) in your email.

I'm thinking of also setting up a template for a copy-paste Sister Claire comic- something in the vein of the infamous Dinosaur Comics, only with blank Sister Claire characters, and running a contest to see who comes up with the best captions. I'll come up with a prize for that as soon as I figure out the details.

If you have any other suggestions, please send them my way! I really apologize for the delay in updates, but my health comes first. T_T Not being able to draw and missing updates is really bringing me down- I don't know what to do with myself! I might take up finger-painting or something.

STAY POSITIVE! STAY POSITIVE!!

Hello, nice to meet you, I'm new to this (awesome) community, etc. Since I haven't seen it up here, I decided to share my first experience with Booster and Beetle, from JLU #43, A League of Their Own. I really loved this issue, but I never decided to look more into the Blue and Gold until much, much more recently, which was lame and regretful on my part. But, because of this community, I feel saved, so, thank you.

There's eighteen pages (so I cut out a few), but they're downsized so hopefully they're not too killer on everyone. I like the part where none of JLU is connected, so even though Booster and Beetle have been on the team a lot, this is... their origin issue, almost at the end of the run.

Around holidays at work, people always bring in the most amazing baked treats for each other.  But for the last 4 years, there's one goofy kid who's always left out.  He can't have anything with dairy or soy in it, and no one yet has come across a recipe that wouldn't kill our little buddy.  So I call upon you, genius goody-makers of this cummunity, help me satisfy my coworker's allergy-ridden sweet tooth without causing his untimely death!

Much love and appreciation :]

Oh my goodness, I'm so excited! Not only do I finally have my children's book available but a couple of my favorite people are letting me sell their work in my store.

Sick of my stuff? Man, now is your chance to expand your library as I'm carry books by Sara Ryan, Steve Lieber and Dylan Meconis! They are super talented comic-makers and story-tellers. I've even made a special section of my store so you can see their work without my junk cluttering it up.

Last year I was hired by the Museum of Glass to illustrate a children's book written by George Shannon to accompany the debut of a special exhibit called Kids Design Glass. It's a super cool project, where children's drawings were re-created into giant glass sculptures. The book follows three of those drawings-turned-sculpture as they explain how they came to exist and some basics on glass art.

dapper_preview_sm

This is a preview of my plush Uncle Dapper that is coming out soon! I need to get better photos since he does have cool looking claws (made from smooth leather- like material) that you can't see in this photo and his hair is too smoothed down for a proper monster (needs to be fluffed up!) This is just a shot the company sent me so i need to get the prototype in hand to get some awesome pictures for the preorder and make sure the real thing holds up IRL.

I'm hoping to start preorders in about a week or so! Iam also trying to think of a cool incentive for the first 100 buyers. A free signed original sketch of Dapper, i think. Stay tuned for info on that.

He will retail for $20 plus shipping.

Where The Wild Things Are

I took a week off from my artwork leading up to Halloween, so I'd have time to work on my costume, and I'm just now cleaning up and scanning some of the pieces I've drawn since then. What's up above is a Where the Wild Things Are illo for [info]katie_can_draw, one of the commissions from the Multiple Sclerosis benefit a month back and of which I'm now halfway through. Hope to have everyone's in the mail by the end of November.

So, speaking of Where the Wild Things are, Kate and I finally got around to seeing it last week. That it's a weird film pretty much goes without saying, and that it's arguably not a film for kids almost goes equally as much without saying - mind you, it's not a movie I'd avoid taking a kid to see (although the children in the audience when we saw it were thoroughly bored about halfway through), it's just very much a recreation of a child's perspective and logic clearly written by and for adults.

The most insightful review I've seen of the film so far comes from the infamously eponymous Vern, who notes rather adroitly that it's a miracle that this film could be made the way it was made, rather than some 3-D musical abortion where Max brings the Wild Things back to the real world, and they have wacky misadventures at the mall to the tune of a Smashmouth song and there's a looney-tunes chase scene and a stirring farewell at the end, with some tacked-on teaser about Where the Wild Things Are 2: Wild Things In Space. I mean, honestly, that is legitimately amazing, and you do have to admire it in that respect, if nothing else.

I will say this: I went into the movie hoping to love it, and I definitely did love it, but it was certainly nothing I expected. I'm disinclined to extrapolate at all on the film, because I think that going in with any preconception as to the qualities of the thing will diminish what it a truly immersive film.

However, I also say with certainty that the last ninety seconds comprise possibly the single most touching moment I've ever seen committed to film...

Baking with Oranges? [Nov. 9th, 2009|01:56 pm]

I just received a whole bunch of not-so-fresh oranges and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for what I could bake with them. They're still good, just getting to the end of their freshness and I know I can't eat them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Radiomaru 11/09 [Nov. 10th, 2009|10:58 am]

radiomaru 11/09, originally uploaded by radiomaru.

What's going on:

Nothing

I will be working on this book for the foreseeable future. The cover is in progress and I'm thinking it (and the title) will be publicized sometime in December. (Hint: the title has "Scott Pilgrim" in it and the cover has Scott Pilgrim on it)

We got a dog over the summer. You may have noticed me only posting dumb ol' dog pictures. Her name is Midge and she is part American Eskimo, part Pomeranian. I'm not sure which parts. She looks more like an Eskimo -- she's not insanely poofy like a Pom, but she has black and white spots (Eskimos are all-white).

So that's what's up. I got a dog and I'm drawing comics. I did a quick website drawing, mostly 'cause I took a picture over the weekend that I thought would work well on the website, and I drew a little wacom doodle using brushes that I downloaded the other day from this wonderful person.

Updates here will continue to be infrequent, but I'm usually found babbling on twitter.

I hope I'm just being overly critical of myself. I had to think exercising everyday for like five months somehow made me fatter or something. It's just every time I go to the doctor, they always mention I should get in better shape (for a variety of reasons).

And speaking of the doctor, doctor's visit today! That means blood test, which means getting stabbed with a needle, which means something close to passing out and throwing up. Fun times! D: I will never, ever, ever get used to it.
